Frequently asked questions

Which level should I choose?

“Recommended” combines lossless savings with tested image compression. Savings depend on your file. “Gentle” leaves images untouched. “Maximum” reduces image quality more, so visible loss is possible. Not every file can be compressed further.

Is my file uploaded?

Only with the “Recommended” level, as shown in the selection. It combines methods not available in the browser; the file is deleted immediately after processing. “Gentle” and “Maximum” run entirely in your browser-your file never leaves your device.

Why is the browser level smaller but not the best?

Because it works differently. It downsizes images to a lower resolution and saves them with heavy compression. This creates small files, but also blotchy letters and image noise. “Recommended” also checks fonts and duplicate data. Image changes are compared with the original. If differences are too great, a gentler version is kept.

Why does it save so little on my document?

Files that are already well compressed often offer little room for savings. Text documents can also become much smaller, for example if they contain large unsubsetted fonts or duplicate data. The output is never larger than the original. Files with signature features remain unchanged so their signature stays valid.

Will the text remain searchable?

Yes, at all three levels. Text is not converted to images. Existing text layers are preserved. Fonts and duplicate data are also optimized on the server. Even the method that delivers the greatest savings for black-and-white scans is lossless with us. The version that can swap individual characters and once caused incorrect numbers on copiers is explicitly disabled.
