Frequently asked questions
What happens to a scan without a text layer?
The tool detects this when you drop the file and starts text recognition right away; the language is detected automatically. You will see a notice explaining why. Once the text is ready, you can continue as usual. For mixed documents, only pages without text are recognized.
What works well, and what doesn't?
Body text, headings, lists, and tables with clear columns convert cleanly. Brochures with text over images, footnotes, and mathematical formulas may be messy: a PDF describes positions, not structure, so structure must be inferred during conversion. Pages are separated by a line.
Why Markdown?
Markdown is plain text with simple formatting. AI tools, note-taking apps such as Obsidian and Notion, wikis, and developer tools can read it directly. Unlike Word, nothing invisible remains in the file, and you can use the text right away.
What happens to images?
By default, they are left out, so you get only the text. With "Include images," you get a ZIP containing the Markdown file and an "images" folder referenced by the text.
Why doesn't it work with my scan?
A scan is an image without text. Apply text recognition first; then conversion will work.
