Edit PDF

Click text in the document and change it. The old text is actually replaced, not covered up. Font, size, and position stay the same. You can also edit a scan: the editor rebuilds pages as real text, then you can change it like in any other PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is the old text really replaced?

Yes. That is the difference from most free tools: they place a white box over the text and write new text on top - the old text stays in the file and can be extracted again. With us, it is removed from the document.

Will the appearance stay the same?

Font, size, color, and position are taken from the original. With standard fonts - Arial, Helvetica, Times, Courier - the result is indistinguishable from the original. With unusual fonts, the replacement font may differ slightly.

Is my file uploaded?

Yes. Unlike our browser tools, this cannot work without it-an editor needs to know what you are working on between your steps. The file is stored in a separate folder and automatically deleted after 60 minutes of inactivity, or after four hours at the latest. The “Done” button deletes it immediately, as does closing the tab. The remaining time is shown at the bottom of the editor.

Can I add or delete text?

Yes. Click a paragraph to edit it-with line breaks, bold, italics, font size, color, and alignment. Text uses the font it is already in; metrically compatible fonts are available for Arial, Calibri, Times, Georgia, and other common fonts. Use the “Text” tool to add new text anywhere. You can also add images, signatures, shapes, freehand strokes, highlights, stamps, and links.

Can I edit a scan?

Yes, and it does more than standard text recognition. OCR only adds an invisible text layer beneath the image: you can search and copy, but the image remains an image, and changed text would disappear underneath it. Instead, the editor measures every character on the page-position, size, font, color, lines, and paragraphs-and rebuilds the page as real text. You can then edit it like any other PDF. The editor detects a scan when you drop it and offers “Make text editable.” This takes a little longer than regular OCR because the page is rebuilt. Since it is a reconstruction, unusual fonts may still have small differences.

How do I redact something?

Use the “Cover” tool in “Redact” mode (shortcut X; press Shift+X to switch between white and black). When applied, it permanently removes text, image parts, and graphics under the black box from the file-unlike “Cover in white,” where the text underneath remains and can be copied. The editor explains this the first time you redact something. Open /pdf-bearbeiten/?werkzeug=schwaerzen to start the editor with this tool selected.

Is there find and replace?

Yes, with Ctrl+F. Search finds matches throughout the document and takes you to them; you can replace them one at a time or all at once. Paragraphs that become longer grow downward if there is space-otherwise, they remain unchanged and you are notified.

What about signed documents?

Any change invalidates a digital signature-this cannot be avoided because the signature confirms the document's unchanged state. The editor warns you before editing a signed document.
