Redact PDF

Draw a rectangle over anything you want removed, or search for a word, name, or number: matches appear in yellow, and one click adds bars to every page where it appears. When you save, the text under the bars is removed from the file, not just covered. Everything runs in your browser.

Drag file here

No upload. Search, redaction bars, and redaction itself run in your browser. The file does not leave your device.

In three steps: Redact PDF

  1. Select a PDF file or drop it here with Drag & Drop.
  2. Draw a rectangle over the content, or search for a word and select “Redact all matches”. Remove bars again with ×.
  3. Redact and save: pages with bars are rebuilt, and the underlying text is gone. The file is saved to your downloads.

Frequently asked questions

Is the text really gone or just covered?

Really gone. Every page with a bar is rebuilt as an image, the bar becomes part of that image, and the original page and its text layer are removed from the file. Copying, searching, or uncovering will not bring the text back. Pages without bars stay unchanged.

Can I still search the result?

Redacted pages become images without a text layer. Other redaction tools do this too because it is the safest method. Use PDF text recognition (OCR) to restore the visible text as a text layer; the bars remain black.

How do I redact a word throughout the document?

Enter a word, name, or number in the search field. All matches are highlighted in yellow, with a count for each page. “Redact all matches” adds a bar to every match, even across line breaks. Uppercase and lowercase do not matter.

What about a scan?

A scan has no text layer, so search finds nothing. You can still redact it manually. To search, first use PDF text recognition (OCR), then open the recognized file here.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Search, bars, and redaction all run entirely in your browser.
